This week, I would like to write about danger signs in pregnancy. Some pregnancy complications can be prevented if medical advice would be sought in time after noticing a danger sign. Research has shown that delay in seeking skilled medical advice in pregnancy, is one the contributors to maternal deaths.
Every pregnancy is unique and at a risk of complications thus the need for you to know about the danger signs. Usually, during your first Antenatal Care(ANC) clinic visit, your health care provider will teach you about danger signs in pregnancy. In addition, if you are attending your clinics in a public health care facility, you will be issued with a Maternal and Child Health Booklet. On page 11 of 40 of the booklet is information about danger signs in pregnancy.
Danger signs in pregnacy are:
- Any vaginal bleeding
- Loss of consciousness
- Severe abdominal pain
- Reduced or no fetal movements
- Severe headache
- Breaking of water
- Excessive tiredness
- Swelling of face and hands
- Difficulty in breathing or breathlessness
- Blurred vision and dizziness.
If you notice any of the above signs or any other abnormal sign, you should immediately seek help from your health care provider.
Remember, “You may delay but time will not” Benjamin Franklin.
